The much-awaited project launch in the NCR region will likely happen in the first week of March. Dwarka expressway, commonly known as North Peripheral Road (NPR), will be open partially, said sources.
As per NHAI officials, the Dwarka Expressway Gurugram stretch will be open for traffic movement from next month. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the project. However, the date for the same is yet to be final.
Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, said “We have requested the Prime Minister to inaugurate the complete packages of UER-II and Dwarka Expressway. I hope that in the next 10-12 days we will get his time and inaugurate these roads.”
India’s first urban elevated expressway is partially ready with final touches being given. The work of street lights and lane directions is about to be finished on the Gurugram part. The fast-paced work makes the local authorities confident about the inauguration of the mega road anytime shortly.
Dwarka expressway is a 29km long expressway connecting Gurugram and Delhi. The 18.9 km out of the total comes under Haryana state. The remaining portion falls under the jurisdiction of Delhi, the national capital.
The expressway stretch in Delhi commences from Shiv Murti on NH 8 and concludes near the Kherki Daula toll plaza. This engineering marvel has the widest and longest urban tunnel. It is 3.6 km in length and has a width compromising 8 lanes.
A cost of Rs. 9 crore is incurred on the development of this project. The expressway will ensure swift commutation between Gurugram and Delhi. It will connect Dwarka Sector 21 to NH 8 via Gurugram Sectors 84, 88, 99-113. Once operational, Dwarka expressway will make travel easy from Gurugram to the IGI airport.
Nishant Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commission Gurugram said, “We had written to the NHAI, requesting it to open the Haryana stretch (of the expressway) as this would help commuters significantly. Though we did not get any response in writing, we were informed about the project’s progress. Minor works such as the installation of street lights, tiles, and thermoplastic road marking are yet to be done. This would not take over 15 days, and the tentative date for the inauguration is either February-end or within the first two weeks of March.”
He further said, Gurugram MP Rao Inderjit Singh met Union Minister Gadkari and NHAI officials regarding the project. He also directed officials to complete the work swiftly to make the expressway operational at the earliest.
In this project, approximately two lakh metric tons of steel is used. The quantity is 30 times higher than the amount used in the making of the Eiffel Tower. Also, nearly 20 lakh cubic metric concrete is used in the making of expressway. The amount is six times what was used in the making of Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.
